Quilt Self Portrait

Cotton, linen, wool, and organza appliqué. Fabric paint and permanent marker. Entirely hand-stitched and hand quilted.
Quilt Self Portrait — autobiographical quilt, ongoing

A hand-stitched, autobiographical quilt.

My first quilt. Inspired by Zak Foster's powerful DTQ approach to improv quilting, I used his series of prompts to guide me in making this piece. No pre-planning. No purchasing new fabric. Just me, my scraps, and my thoughts.

Order and disorder, driving force, inner critic, ambition, as well as other hidden elements — including my childhood best friend's phone number — comprise this textile self portrait.

The prompts that guided it

Questions I sat with.

01
What is the shape of your soul?

Answered in cloth.

02
What is your power word?

Stitched in.

03
What is your inner gift?

Hidden.

04
What way is the wind blowing on your quilt?

Look for the direction.

05
What is something you lost?

A beloved pet.

06
Order & disorder, driving force, inner critic, ambition

All in here.
